Do You Need a Driving License to Ride in Thailand?

The short answer: yes, you should have a valid driving license. The longer answer involves understanding what Thai police actually check and what happens if you don't have one. ## What License Do You Need? For scooters under 125cc, a regular car license from your home country is technically sufficient. For motorcycles over 125cc, you need a motorcycle-specific license. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended. ## International Driving Permit (IDP) An IDP is a translation of your home license into multiple languages. You can get one from your country's automobile association (AAA in the US, AA in the UK, ADAC in Germany). It costs around $20 and is valid for one year. ## What Police Check At checkpoints, Thai police typically ask for your license and check if you're wearing a helmet. If you have an IDP with motorcycle endorsement, you'll be fine. Without one, you may face a fine of ฿500-1,000. ## Insurance Implications This is the critical part: if you have an accident without a valid license, your insurance (both the bike's basic coverage and your travel insurance) may refuse to pay. This is the real risk — not the fine.
